Portraiture

After seeing some wonderful portraits at The National Portrait Gallery, I rather thought that I might try my hand and enlisted the help of friends and colleagues. The demands of my other work has meant that I have had little time to really get in to this, but I have a million ideas about the type of pictures I want to produce.

My first attempt was a picture of a friend, which was a great success as both she an her husband Matt loved it. Some pictures evolve away from your original ideas as indeed this one did. I painted a chilly scene in cool colours with the intention of carrying the colours over to the portrait itself. It just didn’t work with Rachel and on reflection, was never going to; being the warm person she is.

My second portrait was of a work colleague who kindly agreed to model for me. Jordan is a naturally beautiful girl of¬† sunny disposition. Peoples colouring and character often suggest a season and Jordan was always going to be summer. I made the crown of flowers myself, much to the astonishment of my daughters and will probably be drafted into producing them for their weddings¬†one day I’m told.

Jordan is a naturally striking girl and was very enjoyable to paint. I made several initial sketches for this one in preparation for the main picture.

Although it was not the angle Jordan was to be painted from, it was useful for familiarising myself with her features.
